The Race to Cure Sarcoma event not only raises awareness for this rare type of cancer but also supports the Aubrie Pena Legacy Foundation. This important foundation is dedicated to funding a scholarship program that directly aids children battling cancer, ensuring they receive the vital support they need during their fight.
Aubrielle Pena: A Warrior's Brave Journey
Aubrie Pena was a courageous 14-year-old girl who bravely faced a rare sarcoma cancer known as CIC-DUX4. With incredible strength and love, she maintained a positive outlook throughout numerous challenges, often reassuring her parents by saying, 'I got this,' while fighting for her family. Even when faced with difficult news about the progression of her sarcoma, Aubrie's spirit remained unbroken.
Her journey was characterized by:
- Unwavering determination to keep fighting
- A deep love for her family that fueled her strength
- Resilience in the face of incredible challenges
Throughout her treatment, Aubrie continued to dream, planning her Quinceanera, thinking about college, and cherishing joyful moments like going to the movies and concerts. Her parents described her as their 'sweet girl' who fought valiantly until the very end. Tragically, Aubrie passed away on May 9th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and closest friends, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of courage, hope, and love. In honor of her memory, the Aubrie Pena Legacy Foundation was established, featuring a scholarship program designed to support children battling cancer and empower them to pursue their dreams.

Our vision was to honor Aubrie's love for music by establishing a safe space for kids during chemotherapy, allowing them to have a memorable night out in her memory. We firmly believe that every child enduring the hardest times deserves a comfortable place to enjoy their favorite artist.

Aubrie had her sights set on attending The University of Texas at Austin to study Psychology. In her honor, we established the Aubrie Pena Legacy Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting children battling cancer through a scholarship program. In 2024, we proudly awarded four scholarships in memory of Aubrie.

As part of my fundraising journey for the Aubrie Pena Legacy Foundation, I am dedicating each mile of the marathon to someone affected by cancer—whether they are currently fighting, a survivor, or someone we will always remember. This initiative aims to support children battling cancer through our scholarship program, with a $50 donation for each mile completed.

During school winter break, Aubrie and I would take cherished mother-daughter trips, which not only ignited her passion for travel but also created some of our sweetest memories. Inspired by these experiences, we later became involved with the Aubrie Pena Legacy Foundation, which aims to support children battling cancer through its scholarship program.

The first stop on my Aubrie Bucket List was Paris, France. This trip was inspired by the Aubrie Pena Legacy Foundation, which strives to support children battling cancer through its scholarship program. I had always dreamed of visiting Marie Antoinette's bedroom in the Palace of Versailles and seeing the Eiffel Tower illuminated at night.

Another destination checked off the list: Salem, Massachusetts. Aubrie loved fall; it was her favorite season. Being there felt like I was carrying a piece of her. This trip also reminded me of the vital work done by the Aubrie Pena Legacy Foundation, which provides support for children battling cancer through its scholarship program. Where to next?

Miles, Memories, and Mission: Four Friends in DC for Sarcoma Awareness
This emotional weekend was packed with tears of joy, laughter, awareness, sweat, and late-night talks, all driven by a special mission: to cheer on my best friend at the Marine Corps Marathon. Witnessing her dedication, strength, and heart on that course was truly inspiring. This marked her first out-of-state marathon, and I have no doubt it will not be her last. The pride I felt was immense. Her run had a significant purpose: to raise awareness for Sarcoma and honor Aubrie. Through her incredible efforts, she is also supporting the Aubrie Pena Legacy Foundation, which offers a scholarship program aimed at supporting children battling cancer.
